Second-division climber FC Ingolstadt 04 has presented its team for the 2010/2011 season. The new Audi Sportpark, where the team from the city on the Danube will be holding its home matches in the future, provided the backdrop for the event.
FC Ingolstadt 04 will tackle the challenge of the 2nd division of the soccer Bundesliga (federal league) with a line-up of 26 players. The most renowned new signings of the “Schanzer” team coached by former Bundesliga professional Michael Wiesinger are goal-keeper Sascha Kirschstein, who has Champions League and first-division experience under his belt, and the 14-time Austrian national player Ronald Gercaliu.
The Audi Sportpark, which is FC Ingolstadt’s new home, will be finished right in time for the new season after roughly 14 months of construction. It accommodates about 15,000 fans (9,000 seats and 6,000 standing room places) and features a pioneering, compact architecture. A piazza on the western side of the arena provides an ideal meeting place for soccer fans. In addition, particular importance was attached to the infrastructure and short distances. 2,600 parking places for cars and 800 for bicycles are in immediate proximity to the stadium, which not only appeals to sports enthusiasts but is also designed to serve as a venue for other events like concerts, for example.
The Audi Sportpark will be officially opened at 4:30 p.m. on July 24. Before the official ceremony, starting at 1:00 p.m., a family afternoon will feature a wide variety of entertainment. There will be music, interviews and live appearances by athletes on the Radio-IN stage. At 4:45 p.m. the FC Bayern München Allstars and a celebrity team from Ingolstadt will compete in a friendship match and at 6:30 p.m. a rapid tournament with FC Ingolstadt 04, its second-division rival FC Augsburg and the 2009 German Soccer Champion, VfL Wolfsburg, will kick off.
FC Ingolstadt 04 will make its mandatory playing debut in the first round of the DFB Cup against the team of Karlsruher FC at the Audi Sportpark on August 13. On the following weekend the “Schanzer” team will start into the 2010/2011 second-division season in a home match against FC Augsburg.
